Since 1 April, cannabis is no longer a narcotic. This means that cannabis can now be obtained with a ‘normal’ prescription for corresponding complaints. Here we explain the process for cannabis therapy in 5 steps.
To better understand your medical needs and to be able to issue you with a prescription if necessary, make an appointment at a doctor's surgery. From a medical point of view, they will check whether medicinal cannabis is suitable for you. Please note that you can change doctors at any time. This means that if you are turned down for cannabis therapy at a doctor's surgery, it is worth looking further.
You have two options for this.
Once you have found a suitable doctor, it is possible to obtain a prescription for medicinal cannabis. You can discuss which products are suitable for your treatment with both the medical staff and the pharmacy. However, we would like to give you an important tip at this point: Cannabis does not work the same for everyone. This means that cannabis therapy is very individual and it can take some time until you have found the right strain for you. We recommend that you consult closely with your doctor and your pharmacy during this phase.
Depending on whether you have found a local doctor's surgery or would like to use the telemedicine service, you can either have the prescription issued on site or sent to you by post.
You can then redeem the prescription at your local pharmacy of choice or a mail-order pharmacy. However, not every pharmacy is yet familiar with the special requirements for handling cannabis prescriptions. It can therefore be helpful to turn to specialised cannabis pharmacies, most of which even offer postal delivery. This allows you to conveniently fill the prescription online and have your medicinal cannabis delivered to your doorstep.
Once you have completed your initial consultation and would like to continue your cannabis therapy, you can have a follow-up prescription issued. The free choice of doctor also applies here. This means that you are not tied to the practice where you had your initial consultation.
